DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A dog escaped unscathed — and one person was injured — after two separate gun violence incidents in Decatur over the weekend.

The Decatur Police Department is investigating after a gunshot victim showed up to St. Mary’s Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 22-year-old male was shot once in the upper right thigh; his wound is non-life threating, police said.

The police department said the male would not tell them how it happened, where it happened, or who he was with. After checking the hospital’s security camera footage, however, police noticed the vehicle that dropped him off had been reported stolen. Police located the vehicle, but it was unoccupied.

Later in the day on Saturday, police responded to a home in Decatur for a shots fired call. It happened around 11 a.m., near the area of E. Main and S. Water Streets.

When police arrived, they spoke with a woman at the scene. She told them she had let her dog outside, tethered on a leash. She went back inside, but soon heard yelling come from outside. The woman looked outside, saw a teenager pointing a gun at her dog, and fire three shots.

Then, the suspect ran off. Luckily, police said the dog was not hurt. Police are still working to confirm if the dog got loose before or after the gunshots.

Anyone with more information about either incident should contact the Decatur Police Department at 217-424-2711. To submit tips anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers on their website, by calling 217-423-8477 or texting DPD33 to 274637.
