DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Decatur Public Schools is alerting the community to district policy changes ahead of the school year.

Students who come to school smelling like marijuana or other “offensive, distracting, and/or noxious odors” will be required to call home for a change of clothing or will need to go home and change before returning to class.

The district also said that parents and visitors on campus who smell like marijuana will be asked to leave school property.

Decatur Public Schools said it believes the new policies will lead to a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment for everyone.

“As a district, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and focused space for learning,” Dr. Rochelle Clark, Superintendent of Decatur Public Schools, said in a news release. “These updates are not meant to be punitive, but rather proactive steps toward supporting the well-being and success of all students. We want to work in partnership with families to keep our schools safe, welcoming, and distraction-free.”

The district said its policy requiring cell phones and electronic devices to be turned off and in a secure location during class, passing periods and lunch will remain in effect. Decatur Public Schools said this policy will help to reduce distractions and keep students engaged.
