Decatur's Heartfelt Initiative: Discover How One Restaurant is Serving Free Meals to Those in Need

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — An initiative that began with a simple concept for free meals has rapidly expanded to over 200 meals in just a few days. Bobbie Lane’s BBQ in Decatur has introduced a “pay it forward” wall to support this effort.

Patrons have the option to purchase a meal and place the corresponding ticket on the wall, allowing someone else to enjoy a meal at no cost. Brandon Dulik, the General Manager, explained that this initiative was inspired by growing concerns over diminishing SNAP benefits and rising food insecurity.

Initially, the restaurant contributed 20 meals to kickstart the project, and according to Dulik, the response has been overwhelming. The local community has rallied behind the idea, ensuring the wall remains stocked with meal tickets.

“The goal isn’t just about selling lots of tickets. It’s about ensuring that anyone who comes in doesn’t feel judged. They can simply say, ‘Hey, I’m hungry,’ and we’ll take care of them,” Dulik shared. “I wish I could fund this entirely on my own, but it’s just not feasible without community support. That support is crucial and greatly appreciated.”

People get a pulled pork sandwich, a side, and a drink with their free meal. Dulik added that as long as the community keeps supporting, and there are tickets on the wall, they’ll keep handing out food.
