PLAINS, Ga. (WRBL) — Officials and community leaders gathered on Wednesday at the Plains Post Office to dedicate the building to the late President Jimmy Carter and late First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

Postal officials held a ceremony and allowed family members to reminisce, while renaming the building to honor the late president.

The ceremony kicked off with the national anthem, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer from Rev. Tony Lowden, former pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church.

During the ceremony, relatives of the Carters and the Mayor of Plains spoke and recognize the late president and first lady for their honor and dedication to the community during and after Carter’s presidential tenure.

“My parents loved this town, they kept coming back,” said Chip Carter, the son of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter. “It’s a great honor to have their names on that building and to think about all the great things that they did in their life.”

He added, “they dedicate their life as Christians to people who had less than them. And I think it showed throughout their everyday life.”

Plains Mayor Joseph Recker Jr. also shared his thoughts on the legacy of the late president and first lady, pointing to the inspiration the two left after their deaths.

“Plains is a small town, with a huge footprint and a huge impact and that’s because of people like the ones we are going to honor today and their entire family,” Recker said. “This is more than a federal building, it’s the cornerstone of our daily lives.”

He added, “now, every time we pass through these doors we’re going to be reminded of two extraordinary individuals, whose story began right here and whose service had no boundaries.”

After each community member spoke, officials gathered on stage and revealed the plaque that will be now in front of the renamed Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter Post Office.
