SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Deep Center is now accepting applications for adult mentors for the Young Author Project, an introductory writing program for middle school students. Local writers serve as a vital part of the Young Author Project, helping to engage students with language and their stories to encourage their growth as learners, celebrate their lives and communities and express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage.
Workshops are held on-site at area middle schools and prospective mentors need to be available for afterschool sessions at least one day per week. Each workshop is facilitated by two mentor Writing Fellows: local artists, writers and creatives who undertake a semester-long commitment (12 weeks) to lead one or more sessions per week. This is a volunteering opportunity; however a limited number of paid positions are available for mentors able to commit to leading multiple workshops.
Mandatory training for Writing Fellows will be held Friday, August 29th and Saturday, August 30th. Programming for the Fall Semester begins Monday, September 15th.
Jozlynn Carson, a Writing Fellow, says, “Youth need to be listened to. The Young Author Project gives the community a chance to hear the youth, and there’s so much to be heard from them.”
