Defensive TDs jumpstart South Florida to 55-23 win over UTSA

In Tampa, Florida, quarterback Byrum Brown delivered an impressive performance, amassing 348 total yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead South Florida to a commanding 55-23 victory over UTSA on Thursday night. The game also featured two defensive touchdowns for the Bulls.

This triumph elevated South Florida (7-2, 4-1) into a three-way tie in the American Athletic Conference standings alongside Memphis and North Texas, all trailing Navy by just half a game.

Brown showcased his proficiency by completing 14 out of 15 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 109 yards on nine attempts and adding a touchdown. Nykahi Davenport bolstered the ground game with 94 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, while Keshaun Singleton excelled in the air with 122 receiving yards on four catches and two touchdowns.

South Florida set the tone early when Tavin Ward intercepted UTSA’s Owen McCown on the first play, returning it 40 yards for a touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Jarvis Lee sacked McCown for a 13-yard loss, forcing a fumble that Fred Gaskin scooped up and returned 85 yards, giving the Bulls a 14-3 lead.

UTSA managed to score with a 33-yard field goal by Michael Petro late in the first quarter. However, just five seconds into the second quarter, Brown ran in a 13-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 21-3. Although UTSA answered with a 45-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Patrick Overmyer, the Roadrunners (4-5, 2-3) were unable to close the gap any further.

McCown threw for 200 yards and a touchdown and backup Brandon Tennison threw for 109 yards and a touchdown.
