DeLand’s E-Bike Dilemma: Potential Sidewalk Ban & New Helmet Regulations for Young Riders

DELAND, Fla. – In an effort to enhance pedestrian safety, the city commission is contemplating the inclusion of e-bikes in the list of banned mobility devices on downtown sidewalks. Additionally, they are considering implementing a helmet requirement for riders under the age of 18.

Currently, the city code restricts bicycles, scooters, and skateboards from being used on downtown sidewalks. The commission is now deliberating whether to explicitly extend this prohibition to e-bikes as well.

Johnny Kadriu, proprietor of Tony’s New York Pizza, has observed the frequent use of e-bikes on sidewalks where outdoor dining takes place. “It’s similar to cars on the street; some riders are cautious, but others are reckless,” he explained. “This can be particularly concerning when customers are eating outside, or when elderly people and young children are walking. Fortunately, my location has a wide sidewalk, making it somewhat safer, but for other businesses, it poses significant challenges.”

The city commission will gather to discuss these proposed measures at 7 p.m. on Monday. Their decision could shape the future of transportation regulations in downtown DeLand, aiming to balance the needs of different sidewalk users.
