Democratic senator calls for Trump’s removal from office under 25th Amendment

Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, is urging for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office. This comes as Markey faces a Democratic primary challenge this year. His call follows Trump’s admission that he would have been less inclined to pressure Denmark over Greenland if he had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025.

Markey shared his stance on social media, posting “Invoke the 25th Amendment” alongside a screenshot of a New York Times article. The article reported that Trump linked his interest in acquiring Greenland to his disappointment over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, as communicated in a text to Norwegian leader Jonas Gahr Støre.

The New York Times disclosed that Trump sent a text message to Støre on Sunday. In it, he candidly stated that not winning the Peace Prize had emboldened his strategies regarding Greenland, a Danish territory.

Trump’s message read: “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars Plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.” It is notable that the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Prize, is a private entity with members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.

Despite Markey’s appeal, the likelihood of successfully invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump appears slim.

Doing so would require Vice President Vance and a majority of Trump’s Cabinet to transmit to Congress a declaration that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.

That would immediately transfer power to the vice president.

The amendment requires Congress to ratify any decision to remove Trump from office within 21 days of receiving notification from the vice president and the Cabinet.

Two-thirds of both the Senate and the House would need to affirm the decision. Otherwise, the president would regain power.
