In a firm statement from Copenhagen, Denmark’s foreign minister emphasized the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, including its semi-autonomous territory, Greenland. This declaration comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent action of appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland.

President Trump has been vocal since his presidential transition about his interest in bringing Greenland under U.S. jurisdiction. The mineral-rich and strategically significant Arctic island has long been on Trump’s radar, with discussions even hinting at the possibility of military action as a means to exert control. Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance visited a remote U.S. military base on the island, criticizing Denmark for allegedly failing to invest adequately in the region.

While the topic had quieted down over time, it resurfaced in August when Danish officials were prompted to summon the U.S. ambassador. This was in response to reports suggesting that individuals linked to Trump were conducting covert influence operations in Greenland. Such developments are particularly sensitive given that Denmark is a NATO ally of the United States.

On Sunday, President Trump announced the appointment of Governor Landry, describing him as someone who understands Greenland’s crucial role in U.S. national security. Trump expressed confidence that Landry would advocate strongly for American interests, emphasizing the safety and security of allies, and the world at large.

Reacting to his new role, Landry took to social media platform X, expressing his honor in serving in this capacity. He stated his commitment to integrating Greenland into the United States, underscoring the volunteer nature of his position.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in a brief statement emailed by his ministry that “the appointment confirms the continued American interest in Greenland.”

“However, we insist that everyone — including the U.S. — must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he added.

Earlier this month, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service said in an annual report that the U.S. is using its economic power to “assert its will” and threaten military force against friend and foe alike.
