DeSantis Approves New Farm Bill Amidst 'Rural Renaissance'...

SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) — On Monday, Governor Ron DeSantis visited Sebring to officially sign this year’s farm bill into law, highlighting the significant relief it promises to bring to Florida’s agricultural community.

This new legislation addresses a wide range of issues affecting Florida’s agriculture sector, including enhancing public safety, ensuring food security, fostering workforce development, and promoting land conservation.

During the event, State Representative Danny Alvarez (R-Hillsborough) expressed optimism, stating, “If we can find ways to encourage more young individuals to enter farming because land is more affordable and lacks development rights, it’s a victory for Florida.”

A major aspect of the comprehensive bill targets land use, aiming to curb high-density developments in rural areas.

However, critics argue that it could weaken local control, saying there needs to be more guardrails in place to protect land use for wildlife protection and water quality.

“We want to ensure that we are making good on the promises for Floridians that those conservation lands stay in conservation,” said State Rep. Lindsay Cross (D- Pinellas).

Despite any pushback faced during this legislative session, the bill is largely seen as a win for farmers. One of its most highly talked about provisions would ban counties and cities from prohibiting the use of gasoline-powered equipment.

“Some of these local governments want to not let you use certain equipment if it’s gas operated. That’s not their decision. That’s your decision,” DeSantis said.

The bill also aims to strengthen domestic food supply through new investments in agriculture, including programs supporting veterinarians and food distribution.
It launches the Florida Native Seed Research and Marketing Program to promote homegrown agriculture and increase competitiveness.
It makes permanent the Farmers Feeding Florida Program, ensuring Florida-grown food continues to reach families in need.
It criminalizes cheating on commercial driver license (CDL) exams.
It bans signal jamming devices that can disrupt law enforcement and emergency communications.

The bill signing marks a big win for rural communities and farmers across the state. But behind the celebration lies an ongoing game of tug-of-war that may return between the house and senate in the upcoming special sessions.

What about the ‘Rural Renaissance’ bill?

Senate President Ben Albritton (R- Wauchula) spent the past two sessions trying to get his “Rural Renaissance” bill package across the finish line. The bill looked to expand housing, education and infrastructure in rural areas.

It passed off the senate floor in the first week of session this year, but faced resistance in the house, further fueling tensions between the two chambers.

“Sometimes it just takes time,” Albritton said. “The conversation about rural Florida is just beginning.”

Regardless of Rural Renaissance failing to pass yet again, Albritton said he remains hopeful for the years to come.
