Savannah clean energy project put on pause

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — It’s an investment that officials said would elevate our ports and help reduce air pollution in the community, but now the money that will be used for that project is up in the air.

“These are the desperately needed infrastructure investments that are agreed upon by both parties, and I know our federal representatives, our republican and our democratic colleagues who serve this district both believe in these investments happening right now,” District 4 Alderman Nick Palumbo said.

The $48 million from the EPA Clean Ports program is now on hold. The money approved by the Biden administration is now being put on hold as the trump administration is looking to cut spending across the board.

“Investments in sustainable ports infrastructure is an investment in the health of our community and the beautiful coast of Georgia,” Chatham County Commissioner Aaron “Adot” Whitely said. “The data already shows us that climate change is happening to us, and as our shorelines change and storms get worse, we know that this is a real issue.”

Officials say the improvements are vital in protecting public health, addressing climate change, and cutting long-term energy cost.

“Some of our most vulnerable neighbors and communities like Garden City and Carver Village live directly next to the port. When I’ve spoken to you in the past, I’ve shared how carbon emissions are one of the reasons why asthma rates are so high in black and brown communities,” Whitley said.

Alderman Nick Palumbo said we must move forward and look to the future, not the past.

“I am so sick and tired as I know you are of seeing us taking these steps back. These just that it was voted on right. And appropriated in congress. We believe in it here, too. These are real jobs. These are real livelihoods,” Palumbo said.

There is no timeline on when this project could start, but we will keep you updated on if and when funding comes through.
