Different speed limits in school zones confuse Manatee County drivers

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Manatee County commissioners will meet Tuesday to discuss a series of plans centered around school zones.

According to newly elected commissioner Dr. Bob McCann, drivers claim varying speed limits in school zones around the county create confusion. Currently, speed limits in school zones vary across Manatee County from 15 to 20 miles per hour.

The cameras capture cars going more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Violators are fined $100.

Drivers say the fees create a financial burden. “If it’s 20 here and I drive to another area and it is 15, I am thinking it is 20. So, am I going to get a ticket for that? I think it should be uniform,” Ralph Ditillio describes.

McCann wants a uniform speed limit of 20 miles per hour in all Manatee County school zones.

“Is this for safety purposes? Is this to tell people to slow down? Is this some money grab? The thing I want to happen here, I want safety. Twenty has been proven safe, so, that is all we need to do. Let’s get consistent throughout all of the roads that we control within the county,” McCann said.

Reducing the hours school zone speed cameras are active is one of the changes they will be discussing.

School zone speed cameras were a program they started at the beginning of the school year.

Currently, the cameras are active throughout the entire school day. County leaders are considering changing the camera hours, they’d only be active when students are arriving or leaving school.

McCann said he’s constantly hearing from families upset about the program.

“I probably heard about 300 people, already, complained about this,” McCann said.

Both changes are up for discussion during Tuesday’s commission meeting.
