Disbursements Begin for $95M Siri Settlement: What Are the Payout Amounts?

In a recent development, individuals might notice some extra funds in their accounts as payouts from a substantial $95 million class action lawsuit against Apple, concerning its virtual assistant Siri, are now being distributed.

This settlement stems from a lawsuit initiated by a resident of California. The suit alleged that Siri could be inadvertently activated, leading to unauthorized recordings of conversations, which were allegedly shared with third parties. According to Reuters, plaintiffs claimed they witnessed advertisements for Olive Garden and Air Jordan shoes after having discussed these topics near an Apple device.

Although Apple has consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating to Nexstar that “Siri has been designed with user privacy in mind from the outset,” the company still chose to settle the lawsuit for $95 million.

For those affected, it’s time to check your inbox. Notifications regarding the settlement have been sent to certain Dollar General shoppers. The deadline to file claims ended last July, and an appeal initially threatened to postpone the payments. However, the settlement administrators have confirmed that the appeal has been “voluntarily dismissed,” and distributions began on Friday.

To qualify for a portion of the settlement, you had to have a Siri-equipped Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. During that time, your “confidential communications” must have been “obtained by Apple and/or were shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation.” Qualifying members received emails and postcards notifying them, but others were also invited to apply if they believed they were eligible.

You were allowed to claim up to five Siri-enabled Apple devices with the chance to receive up to $20 per qualifying device. That means, at best, you could receive $100. However, officials said payments could increase or decrease based on the number of valid claims. Tens of millions of people may qualify for the settlement, Reuters previously reported.

Some Reddit users said they reported five Apple devices and received $40.10, working out to about $8 a device. Others reported receiving $24.06 or $16.04. Some claimed to have reported more than one Apple device, yet only received $8.02.

Many on Reddit said that, as of Monday, they haven’t yet received payments to their PayPal accounts or the virtual gift card they opted for. Claimants may want to keep an eye on their accounts, if they selected a direct deposit. They may also want to monitor their email (and spam folder) for information on virtual gift cards.

Other settlements have taken a few weeks to send out payments.
