(NEXSTAR) – While May might pass as an ordinary month for some, it promises to be a unique financial opportunity for others, offering the rarity of a three-paycheck month.

Throughout the year, individuals receiving biweekly paychecks occasionally experience months with three pay periods. For those on a weekly pay schedule, this can happen five times a year.

If your pay schedule is every other week, you’ll enjoy the benefit of a three-paycheck month just twice annually.

Whether May serves as a month of additional income hinges on the timing of your most recent paycheck.

Will I get an extra paycheck in May?

If you received three paychecks in January, then no. If you can’t recall, take a look at the last time you were paid. If you were paid on Friday, April 24, the answer is also no.

In order to get three paychecks in May, you need to be paid on Friday, May 1, then May 15, and finally, May 29. This also means that, based on technicality, if you’re paid on Thursdays, May won’t be a month of bonus paychecks – April will (April 2, 16, and 30).

Why will I only get two paychecks in May?

You can blame the calendar and your employer’s payment schedule.

There aren’t an even number of weeks to align with the number of months in our calendar year. To get all 52 weeks into our 12-month year, four end up with more Fridays than most.

That means, twice a year, those paid bi-weekly benefit from a triple paycheck month.

Whether you get paid during odd-numbered weeks or even-numbered weeks determines which months your extra paychecks come.

If May is your triple-paycheck month, your next “extra” payday will come in October. If you will receive only the normal amount of paychecks next month, your next three-payday month is July.

It’s important to note that whenever you receive an extra check, it isn’t like you won the lottery. Instead, financial experts encourage treating the payments as what they are: a portion of the entire salary you’re entitled to in 2026. If your budget is balanced for the month, they recommend putting the additional funds toward paying down a debt, setting aside for another month, or tucking it away in your savings.
