A doctor from northwestern Ohio has been arrested on charges of secretly and forcefully administering abortion medication to a woman whom he allegedly impregnated. This incident has raised significant legal and ethical questions and is unfolding in Lucas County.
The accused, Dr. Hassan Abbas, is a surgical resident at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Court records reveal that Abbas was involved in an extramarital affair with the woman, who discovered she was pregnant in December 2024.
According to the court documents, Abbas initially urged the woman to terminate the pregnancy, making it clear he was unwilling to support the continuation of the pregnancy. This led the woman to end their relationship upon learning Abbas was married. Despite this revelation, she expressed her intention to carry on independently.

Nonetheless, the couple reconciled later that month and began discussing family planning. However, on December 18, during a visit to Abbas’ home in Holland, a heated phone conversation with his father, Jihad Abbas, who is also a defendant in a related civil lawsuit, reportedly took place.
The contentious call seemed to exacerbate Abbas’ anxiety and agitation, particularly given the cultural and religious implications of having a child outside of marriage, as outlined in an amended complaint filed in the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas.
That evening, the victim says she woke up with Abbas on top of her attempting to force medication down her throat. She says she ingested the medication out of fear of suffocation and Abbas allegedly told the woman that his father, Jihad, would never allow the woman’s pregnancy.
“You have to understand…. My father will cut me off, take my vehicles, make me move…. Please understand,” Abbas reportedly said, per court documents.
The victim says Abbas took her keys and phone to prevent her from calling 911 and so she instead attempted to rinse her mouth out. Police said there was white powder residue on the woman’s face, her sleeves and on the bed. She then fled the residence and attempted to induce vomiting.
After arriving at the hospital, it was confirmed that the victim had ingested the “plan C” pill made of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which was illegally obtained by Abbas, police said. The victim began hemorrhaging about an hour later and she suffered a miscarriage.
The victim also told police that every time the two were together in December, Abbas would offer her tea or hot chocolate, a plan confirmed in court documents that was devised by Hassan and Jihad in which Hassan would spike the woman’s drinks with the “plan C” pill to induce a miscarriage.
Hassan Abbas was indicted on Dec. 4 and on Friday a Lucas County judge issued him a $75,000 bond and ordered him to surrender his passport. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
According to multiple sources, The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Abbas’ medical license and he was placed on administrative leave at the hospital on Nov. 5.
