TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was arrested Thursday after Tampa police said he tied his pet dog to the back of his pickup truck and drove for nearly a mile with the dog dragging behind.

A witness called 911 around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12 after spotting 72-year-old Johnnie Davis driving by on West Kennedy, the Tampa Police Department reported.

The witness told police Davis had tied a dog by its leash to the back of his green Ford truck.

Responding officers said they found the dog with evidence of severe trauma. The dog was taken to a veterinary facility for emergency treatment but ultimately died from its injuries, authorities said.

Investigators determined that Davis had driven for nearly a mile before surveillance video showed him making a sharp turn into a bank parking lot.

Police said the force from the turn caused the dog to come loose from the leash. Davis was seen using an ATM before driving off and leaving the severely injured dog at the bank, according to detectives.

Officers found Davis at his home on Thursday, Feb. 13 and took him into custody. He was booked into the Orient Road Jail on one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

“The cruelty inflicted on this helpless animal is both heartbreaking and unacceptable,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our officers acted swiftly to ensure this criminal was identified and taken into custody. We will continue to seek justice for innocent lives and hold those responsible accountable.”
