As Disneyland revels in its 70th anniversary, one enduring love story shares a parallel milestone. Dick and Cynthia Borrud, who embarked on their honeymoon at “The Happiest Place on Earth” just weeks after its grand opening in 1955, have cherished a tradition of visiting the iconic theme park every year since.
During their inaugural visit, the couple experienced the magic of classic attractions such as the King Arthur Carousel, the Mark Twain Riverboat, the Jungle Cruise, and the Disneyland Railroad.
Their day at Disneyland was spent joyfully until the afternoon, when they ventured out to the picnic area just beyond the gates to enjoy a meal with family members who had accompanied them, as recounted by the Disney Parks Blog.
This initial visit soon evolved into an annual pilgrimage whenever they returned to Southern California. As the Borrud family expanded, the couple’s children and later their grandchildren joined in the beloved tradition.
That one visit soon became an annual stop whenever they returned to Southern California. As their family grew, children and later grandchildren joined the trips.
Family photo albums tracked the park’s evolution alongside their own.
Now in their 90s and living in Ellensburg, Washington, the couple returned this year during Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, traveling with their daughter Julie and their grandchildren, Anna and Lars Enger.
Despite new additions to the resort, Dick and Cynthia Borrud still favor attractions from Disneyland’s earlier days, including the Disneyland Railroad, “It’s a Small World,” and Jungle Cruise.
They also love ordering coffee and treats from the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe on Main Street, U.S.A., enjoying a glass of wine at Mendocino Terrace at Disney California Adventure and seeing the neon lights glow at sunset in Cars Land.
