Downtown Sarasota Restaurant Marks 40 Years of Culinary Excellence

In Sarasota, Florida, just steps from the intersection of Lemon Avenue and Main Street, sits Patrick’s 1481—a beloved dining establishment that has been a central part of the community for years.

The restaurant opened its doors on December 10, 1985, thanks to the vision of Jim “Sully” Sullivan and his three partners. At that time, Main Street was home to only a few eateries, a stark contrast to the bustling dining scene that thrives there today.

As the Florida Strawberry Festival 2026 concert series gears up with exciting acts and ticket sales announcements, Patrick’s 1481 marks a significant achievement this week: four decades of successful operation.

A testament to its enduring appeal, many of the restaurant’s employees have been part of its journey for much of its 40-year history.

“We have got a great customer base and great employees. My chef has been with me for 25 years and I’ve got long-standing servers with a lot of years with me,” Sullivan said. “When we first opened up, we signed a 25-year lease. That was my projection and we made it, and then I didn’t want to quit, so I signed another lease for a number of years and yeah, we are still going strong.”

Patrick’s 1481 has become known over the years for its relaxed atmosphere, tasty food and drinks. One of the standouts on its menu is the burger. The restaurant hosts a “Burger Night” every Monday.

“We have been voted best burger in Sarasota for 40 years, so that is a number one staple, but we have an extensive menu; steak, seafood, salads, sandwiches, all the above,” Sullivan said.

Ahead of an anniversary celebration Wednesday, other local business owners stopped by the establishment to congratulate Sullivan on his success in such a tough industry.

News Channel 8 asked him what he thinks has made the business succeed for so long.

“You have to start with good food, you have to start with good employees, and you have to have a good, friendly atmosphere, and those are the three keys for me. And, like I said, I have had long-term employees which has really helped me,” Sullivan said.

Customers from near and far joined in on the festivities Wednesday, including some who have been dining at Patrick’s 1481 since it opened in 1985.
