URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Part of downtown Urbana is currently under boil orders as a result of water main breaks.

The American Water Customer Advisory Map shows that the affected part of downtown is split into two separate areas that are very close to each other. The larger of the two areas includes Lake Street between Park Street and University Avenue, University between Central Avenue and Crystal Lake Drive, and Race St between University and the railroad tracks north of Griggs Street

American Water crews started making emergency repairs to the main break at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, which is when the boil order went into effect.

Those in the area of this boil order may experience a service interruption or low water pressure. Repairs were initially expected to take approximately four to six hours to complete, but as of approximately 3:45 p.m. on Friday, the boil order was still in effect.

Some of the businesses in this area include Culver’s, Windy City Express, Wood N’ Hog BBQ, Silvercreek and Chase Bank. An employee at Culver’s told WCIA that the restaurant has stayed open during the boil order, as they are still able to provide customers with bottled water and cans of soda.

The smaller of the two boil orders is in effect on University Avenue from McCullough Street to Central Avenue. The cause of this order was also a water main break, and people in the affected area were first notified at 10:33 a.m. on Friday. Dunkin’ Donuts is one of the businesses in this affected area.

This boil order is expected to last until approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday.

People in both of these areas are asked to bring any water used for drinking or cooking to a rolling boil for five minutes. This water is fine to use for bathing, washing and other common uses.
