FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WFLA) — A driver is lucky to be alive after a slab of concrete smashed into his vehicle while driving underneath a tunnel in South Florida.

Gary Gerbino was driving through the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday when a piece of concrete shattered his rear window.

“I didn’t know what the heck happened, so I turned around,d and I was startled, and my complete back window was crashed,” Gerbino told NBC affiliate WTVJ. “It was scary, really scary. I was shaking.”

The driver pulled over to figure out what exactly went through his window. Gerbino found a bunch of concrete chunks all over his back seat, along with glass.

“If I had a kid in the backseat, they’d be dead. I’m like, thank God it didn’t crash the sunroof or the windshield. If it crashed the windshield, I wouldn’t be here.”

Gerbino also expressed concern over the incident, given that the tunnel has previously closed for safety improvements and repairs, WTVJ reported.

In 2021, the Florida Department of Transportation began the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Rehabilitation and Tunnel Top Plaza Project to improve the structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural and life safety, including the removal of delaminated tiles and repairing spalls and ventilation buildings.

“It’s all been fixed,” Gerbino told WTVJ. “It’s brand new, and why is the ceiling falling?”

Now Gerbino is urging the department to reevaluate the tunnel, as this incident could have resulted in a different outcome.

“If it was my windshield, I would have crashed,” Gerbino said.

WFLA.com has reached out to FDOT for a statement but did not receive an immediate response back.
