CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. () – A Georgia State Patrol (GSP) chase that ended in a crash back in June also resulted in a GSP trooper colliding with another car that happened to be nearby.

Over a month later, that driver who was hit said GSP has not taken the steps to make him whole for the damage to his vehicle.

“My vehicle is still in the same shape it was before, just held on with bubblegum and wire. We’ve got it held together with wire, but it’s not repaired,” Brett Campbell, the driver who was hit, said.

On June 17, a GSP trooper began pursuing a stolen vehicle, and the chase ended with the suspect crashing and flipping the car, according to GSP.

However, during the chase, the trooper pursuing the suspect hit the front of Campbell’s car as well, according to a crash report obtained by .

On that day, Campbell told , “We heard the sirens. So, we stopped. That’s when we looked to the left and saw the car skidding. He basically skidded between me and the other cars. That’s when the accident hit me.”

In the crash report, the trooper is listed as the at fault party.

However, a month later, Campbell said GSP has only advised him to contact his insurance company.

When he did contact them, Campbell said his insurance company deemed him at fault, despite what’s listed on the crash report.

“They may say they’re not putting me at fault, but the write-up, the way they wrote it up, it’s putting me at fault,” he said. “They’re saying I pulled out into the intersection, stopped in the intersection…There’s no way, I couldn’t have went anywhere else. If I would’ve moved any further, they would have been in my side, in my hip.”

The crash report said “Vehicle #2 began to enter GA 25 NB and stopped partially in the roadway. Vehicle #1 unable to stop struck the drivers front.”

Now, Campbell is hoping for some relief but, if nothing else, he’s hoping for a change.

“Next time, it may be more than a front end. It might be somebody’s life,” he said.

reached out to Georgia State Patrol to clarify how Campbell could have been interpreted as the at fault party, and a representative said quote, “Mr. Campbell is not cited as the at-fault driver. The only person with contributing factors on the crash report is the trooper.”
