EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. () – As the calendar year draws to a close, Edgefield County came together for a vibrant celebration downtown, spotlighting the remarkable achievements of local students at the community’s “On the Square” gathering.

Students from across the county were honored for their impressive feats, from excelling in sports to shining academically. The square was a lively scene filled with neighbors, educators, and local dignitaries who gathered to applaud successes achieved on both athletic fields and educational fronts.

“This is a fantastic evening for Edgefield County,” remarked South Carolina Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey.

“We are celebrating significant victories at both our middle schools and high school, including two state championships,” he added.

A particular academic highlight came from Merriwether Middle School, which proudly earned an Excellent rating from the South Carolina Department of Education for the second consecutive year. According to officials, this accolade recognizes accomplishments beyond mere test scores.

“This is really a comprehensive look at the entirety of the school,” said Mike Rosier, public information officer for the Edgefield County School District.

“So it’s academics, school culture, and everything that goes on in the school plays into that report card.”

Merriwether Middle School also finished as the runner-up behind Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School in the state mock trial competition.  First-year team member Kirk Jackson said the experience taught him valuable life lessons.

“Teamwork. Never give up and be passionate. “And if you can’t remember anything, just keep on going and not get nervous.”, Jackson said.

While academic achievements were front and center, much of the excitement centered around Strom Thurmond High School’s football championship victory—the school’s first state title since 2005.

Former Strom Thurmond player Aramis Hillary, who was part of the 2005 championship team, said the win brought generations together.

“I know some of the guys that played with us that came before those guys that won in 2025,” Hillary said.

“I know they’re extremely proud. We were hugging at the game just like it was that night that we won. We’re all one community, and I think everybody comes together.”

School leaders say the recognition highlights the commitment of students, teachers, and staff across Edgefield County.
