Edgefield Inmate Successfully Recaptured After Peaceful Escape from Work Camp

EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. – On Wednesday, March 25th, at around 9:00 a.m., inmate Johnathan Pineda-Diaz made an unauthorized departure from the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) work camp situated on Gary Hill Road in Edgefield County.

A Facebook post revealed that Pineda-Diaz was spotted heading toward the Augusta Road area, close to the National Wild Turkey Federation.

In response, correctional officers from FCI Edgefield teamed up with deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies to commence an immediate search.

Officials assured the public that Pineda-Diaz was not believed to be armed or dangerous during his brief period of absence.

The search culminated in the discovery of Pineda-Diaz at the Quality Inn located on Augusta Road in Edgefield County.

He was taken into custody by deputies without incident.

Pineda-Diaz is currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center and is awaiting additional charges related to the incident.
