SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — The Effingham County softball team has once again secured its spot in the state quarterfinals, marking the fourth consecutive year they have reached this milestone. On October 21, the Lady Rebels triumphed over Seckinger in a decisive Game 3 during the second round of the GHSA state playoffs.
The game began with a challenging situation for Effingham County, as they found themselves trailing after giving up three runs in the first inning. However, they quickly responded, narrowing the gap by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The tension heightened dramatically in the top of the sixth inning when Seckinger, facing a 5-3 deficit, loaded the bases with two outs. A powerful hit sent the ball soaring to the centerfield wall, allowing two runners to score and tie the game at five. Nevertheless, a crucial play at home plate resulted in the runner from first being called out, a decision that sparked discontent among Seckinger fans, as it prevented their team from taking the lead.
The momentum shifted in Effingham County’s favor in the bottom of the sixth. Shelby Zeigler, the Rebels’ third baseman, delivered a pivotal hit with a line drive that barely eluded the reach of Seckinger’s shortstop. This play brought home Effingham’s sixth run, ultimately clinching their victory and advancing them further in the playoffs.
The second big moment came in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Effingham County third baseman Shelby Zeigler put a line drive just over the outstretched arm of the Seckinger shortstop. Effingham’s sixth run crossed, which sealed the game.
Effingham County will face Creekview in the Final 8. All games for Class AAAAA will take place on Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at South Commons Softball Complex.
Wayne County also heads to Columbus. The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Allatoona, 8-4, in Game 3. Wayne County will play defending Class AAAA state champion Harris County in the state quarterfinals. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
