FISHER, Ill. (WCIA) — Fisher freshman Ellie Emberson is already breaking records, setting a new school and conference meet record in the two-mile.

Emberson qualified for state in the one mile and two mile events.

In Thursday’s prelims, she was the highest-finishing freshman in the mile with a time of 5:19.44.

She started running back in fourth grade, back when COVID hit.

Emberson didn’t expect to set record-setting times this early in her high school career.

“No, I did not, but now I know I have to break it over my next three years,” Emberson said.

“It’s once in a lifetime you get an athlete that comes along like this, she’s very self-motivated,” Fisher track and field coach Neil Bidner said. “She’s willing to do whatever workout I give to her to reach those goals.”

Emberson is now eligible for $1,000 scholarship we’ll give away to one boy and one girl at the end of the school year.

If you know a local high school athlete who should be athlete of the week, nominate them here.
