ATLANTA, Ga. – A KLM Airlines flight set to depart from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport experienced an unexpected delay on Tuesday due to a passenger’s false alarm, leading to a flurry of activities, according to Atlanta Police.
The incident unfolded aboard KLM Flight 622, which was on its way to Amsterdam. A 32-year-old passenger, Johannes Van Heertum, dialed 911 from the plane, erroneously claiming there was a weapon on board. In a state of panic, Van Heertum opened an emergency exit and activated the inflatable escape slide while the aircraft was taxiing.
The plane was directed back to Ramp 9, where Atlanta Police officers boarded to address the situation, taking Van Heertum into custody.
Authorities indicated that Van Heertum might have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. Emergency medical technicians assessed him at the airport’s International Terminal Precinct before charges were filed against him.

Following the incident, Van Heertum was taken to the Clayton County Jail without further incidents. The Atlanta Police Department’s Homeland Security division has been informed of the situation.
Police emphasize that the information remains preliminary as the investigation continues.
