EMORY, Va. (WJHL) – Carson-Newman contained one of the South Atlantic Conference’s most explosive offenses but couldn’t generate enough firepower of its own in a 19-13 loss to No. 22 Emory & Henry on Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Wasps entered averaging 39 points per game but were limited to their lowest scoring output of the year. Still, Carson-Newman managed just eight first downs and went 2-of-11 on third down.

After trailing 5-3 at halftime, the Eagles took the lead in the third quarter on a 52-yard field goal from Bennett Smith and a 50-yard touchdown strike from Zane Whitson to Jeremiah Carroll. But the offense stalled in the fourth, producing just 11 total yards over the final four drives. Emory & Henry capitalized with a Rudolph Paul rushing touchdown and a late field goal to secure the win and extend its home win streak to nine games.

The Eagles’ defense kept the team in contention, forcing multiple red-zone stops and recording two sacks to extend their streak to 28 straight games with a sack. Terry Lemon led with nine tackles, while Martavis Mason added eight.

“We battled to the end and we didn’t make enough plays on offense to win the game,” head coach Ashley Ingram said. “We’ve got this open week to regroup. Tip your hat to those guys.”

Carson-Newman heads into a bye week before traveling to face Anderson on Oct. 18.
Emory & Henry takes on the Mars Hill Lions Saturday, Oct. 11.
