ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is grappling with significant environmental challenges, including hurricanes, flooding, and wildfires, much like many regions around the globe.

Ahead of Earth Day, the community gathered at Lake Eola in Orlando for an early celebration hosted by Vegetarians of Central Florida.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, which aims to unite individuals in learning about solutions for a safer and cleaner planet.

Organizer Vanja Grbic emphasized that everyone can contribute to environmental efforts.

“Something as small and simple as bringing your grocery bag next time you go grocery shopping makes a big difference, so we are not filling up the local landfills with plastic bags,” Grbic stated.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including displays of vegan cupcakes, desserts, eco-friendly jewelry, and sustainable clothing.

Environmentalists highlighted the importance of protecting plants, animals, and insects. An insect demonstration showcased the role of butterflies in pollination.

“Butterflies are just like bees; they are the only two creatures that pollinate vegetation. If it weren’t for them, we would have no vegetation,” a demonstrator explained.

Additionally, some proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities. Grbic noted, “The money that is being donated here at this event goes toward education when it comes to the environment here with local organizations.”

As Central Florida continues to face environmental challenges, events like this serve as a reminder of the collective efforts needed to foster a sustainable future.
