ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — EO Companies announced Tuesday it acquired the former Food City location in Abingdon.
The site, located off Exit 17 from Interstate 81, will be used to strengthen well-being, connection and opportunity in Southwest Virginia, according to a news release from EO.
The property is located near EO’s Regional Workforce and Child Development hub that opened in 2024.
“We believe this area holds immense potential as a catalyst for community impact,” Travis Staton, President and CEO of EO Companies, said in the release. “By investing in properties that are both highly visible and centrally located, we’re creating new opportunities to strengthen regional belonging, connectedness and wellbeing.”
EO stated the long-term goal is to continue growing local talent, attracting new residents and creating more reasons for people to stay in the region.
“In the coming months, EO will conduct a regional assessment of existing community assets and identify gaps these properties might fill—particularly in areas related to social connection, placemaking, recreation, and civic engagement,” EO said in the release. “This work will be guided by listening to the community and actively involving residents and partners in shaping the future of the site. At the same time, EO is beginning to convene public and private partners to build the collaborative support and raise the capital needed to bring the project to life.”
