VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A former Miami-Dade police officer faces charges after authorities say he impersonated a law enforcement officer while claiming to investigate a missing person case in Central Florida.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul Fluty, 39, this week after he allegedly showed up at a Deltona home displaying a badge and credentials while claiming to be tracking a missing girl.

Investigators say Fluty, who is no longer an active law enforcement officer, is not affiliated with any federal task force.

When questioned, Fluty told detectives he presented his old badge “out of habit” and “by mistake,” according to authorities.

Officials booked Fluty into the Volusia County Jail on charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer.

He was later released after posting a $2,000 bond.
