Ex-Paxton Pharmacist Accepts Plea Deal, Could Serve Up to 5...

In Paxton, Illinois, a former pharmacist has admitted guilt in a case involving the intent to distribute a controlled substance. This development follows a plea agreement that led to the dismissal of a more severe charge. Despite the plea deal, she still faces the possibility of a prison sentence lasting up to five years.

According to coverage by WCIA 3 and the Ford County Chronicle, Jenna Lee Vogel, aged 36 and hailing from Gibson City, confessed to the Class 3 felony charge under the terms of the plea bargain. The admission leaves Vogel facing a potential sentence ranging from 30 months of probation to five years behind bars. Her sentencing is slated for June 2.

As part of the plea deal, the prosecution agreed to drop a more severe charge—a Class X felony for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Until her sentencing in June, Vogel will remain under a pretrial release order initially issued during her arraignment in March 2025.

The plea was entered in Ford County Circuit Court and was the result of negotiations between Vogel’s attorney, James Martinkus of Champaign, and State’s Attorney Andrew Killian, as reported by the Chronicle.

She was the onetime owner and head pharmacist of Doug’s Compounding Pharmacy, which has since closed down.

Charging documents show that the Class 3 felony alleges Vogel “knowingly possessed with the intent to deliver an amount of amphetamine” on March 10, 2023, while the dismissed charge alleged she “knowingly possessed with the intent to deliver 100 grams or more of a substance containing hydrocodone” on that same date.

That day, 43,893 controlled substances were removed from her Gibson City home by investigators for the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. This information came according to a complaint — filed by Mary Meehan, chief of health-related prosecutions for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation — and led to the temporary suspension of Vogel’s registered pharmacist license by the same department.

The drugs seized included medications in their original manufacture bottles, as well as unlabeled vials, containers of compounded creams and products “with and without product name,” and loose tablets and capsules in the bottoms of bags and totes, the complaint said. The Chronicle noted that only some of these were Vogel’s prescriptions.

Three days after this, the complaint said Vogel’s former husband turned over some of the antihypertensive drug Clonidine to the DEA that had been found in their home. It also said Vogel’s former pharmacy, located at 137 North Market Street in Paxton, which closed suddenly months earlier, had purchased over 50,000 tablets of Clonidine but never sold them.

The complaint also said her three kids’ childcare providers said they had noticed the kids were “sleepy and lethargic.” It also led to a finding that Vogel poses “an imminent danger to the public” and the suspension of her license, which was effective May 5, 2023.
