AUGUSTA, Ga. () – The Richmond County Board of Education has greenlit the transformation of T.W. Josey High School into a College and Career Academy, a project that includes partial demolition of the existing structures.

During their meeting on Tuesday, RCBOE officials decided to preserve the name T.W. Josey, honoring the institution’s rich legacy.

“As the second public high school for African Americans in Augusta, Georgia, following Laney, it holds significant historical value,” remarked T.C. Edwards of the naming committee. “We felt it was crucial to maintain the name T.W. Josey High School to ensure its historical significance endures at its current site.”

In addition to retaining the name, the new T.W. Josey High School College and Career Academy will continue to use the existing mascot and school colors. Meanwhile, Barton Chapel Elementary and Glenn Hills Elementary will merge to form the newly named “Chapel Hills Elementary.”

This modernized elementary school will be constructed on the grounds where Barton Chapel Elementary currently stands.
