ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) – The charming city of Elizabethton recently hosted a lively event known as ‘Seuss on the Loose,’ part of the Read Across America initiative. This gathering aimed to spark a love for reading among participants, drawing them to local shops and the public library.

Event-goers kicked off their adventure at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library before exploring downtown boutiques and the picturesque Covered Bridge Park. Along the way, they enjoyed a variety of activities including storytelling sessions by guest readers, creative crafts, vibrant decorations, and even encounters with characters from Dr. Seuss’s beloved books.

Bernadette Weese, the Director of the Elizabethton Public Library, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Starting the journey at the library for ‘Seuss on the Loose’ allows people to discover the vast collection of books we offer and rekindle their passion for reading.”

She emphasized that the event also serves as a unique opportunity to strengthen community bonds through the lens of literacy, an aspect often overlooked.

Weese aimed for the event to not only highlight the library but also to support the surrounding local businesses in downtown Elizabethton.

“The way it’s set up, we often have a lot of people getting library cards when they come in,” Weese said. “Then by going to each of the downtown businesses, they’re able to see all the really unique shops that we have here.”

Seuss on the Loose falls during the week of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which is on March 2.
