OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that it has terminated its executive director just days after former Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested amid a massive investigation involving illegal gambling and public corruption.

Officials with the sheriff’s office confirmed the firing of Executive Director Nirva Rodriguez and a civilian employee named Ruben DeJesus.

In a statement posted on social media, Rodriguez said that her termination was a separate matter from the suspension of Lopez.

Her post went on to say in part, “I have no knowledge of the allegations against the former sheriff, and I am not involved in that investigation. As an at-will employee, I understand that my employment can be terminated at any time without cause. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served the citizens of Osceola County, and I am proud of the good work that was accomplished during my time at the agency.”

Lopez was arrested on Thursday on two first-degree felonies of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering. He is accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal cash payments as part of what prosecutors are calling an organized criminal enterprise.

He remains behind bars after a judge on Friday set his bond at $1 million.
