SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Coastal Empire and Lowcountry are bracing for milder weather in the coming days, but an increase in the likelihood of wintry conditions is on the horizon for the southeastern region.

Tuesday brought mostly sunny skies, but temperatures remained brisk, with afternoon highs only reaching the low to mid-50s across most areas.

In contrast, the next few days promise a taste of spring.

Wednesday morning will kick off with below-freezing temperatures, as some inland areas could see the mid to upper 20s. However, by afternoon, expect temperatures to climb into the lower 60s under partly cloudy skies.

As we look towards Thursday and Friday, morning temperatures will range from the low to mid-40s, with afternoon highs reaching the upper 60s. Some spots might even touch the lower 70s.

Major changes are expected over the weekend with colder temperatures returning and a risk for freezing rain in the area. Freezing rain is liquid precipitation that freezes on contact with cold surfaces.

It is too soon to make a precise call on where the most ice may form and how much. However, it is possible that portions of Georgia and South Carolina experience a significant tree-breaking ice storm event.

The best chance for accumulating ice generally is along and north of Interstate-16. The more north you travel, more significant ice accumulation may be experienced.

There is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast for the weekend and into next week. Storm Team 3 will begin to get a better picture of what we will experience in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry as we get a little closer to the weekend.
