(NEXSTAR) – Numerous legislative proposals have sought to end the biannual clock changes by either adopting permanent standard time or sticking with daylight saving time year-round. However, a novel proposal recently introduced to Congress suggests an alternative approach.
Dubbed the Daylight Act of 2026, this bill, presented by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), proposes adjusting U.S. clocks forward by half an hour from their current setting and maintaining this new time indefinitely. This adjustment, referred to as a half-permanent daylight saving time, would not only eliminate the need for seasonal time changes but also distinguish the U.S. as one of the few nations with half-hour time zones, creating what might be termed “American Time.”
