POOLER, Ga. () – The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler hosted a Space and STEM Day Saturday, hoping to get young kids hooked on science.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with engineers, astronauts,” said volunteer educator Becky Busby, “students are my absolute favorite group of people to work with because they’re so excited and they’re so curious.”

Leaders with the Mighty Eighth tell News 3 that the final frontier belongs to today’s children.

“When they have these experiences early on, as they get older, high school college things like that, they have that curiosity because they are the next generation,” said Busby. “They’re the ones that are going to be putting the next boots on the moon and hopefully boots on Mars one day.”

Museum leaders surrounded their World War II exhibits with hands-on STEM education to highlight the war’s advancements in technology and science and how they influence our lives today.

“It’s a fantastic way to get some history in along with science and all these other educational moments,” said Heather Thies, the director of education and volunteers for the Mighty Eighth.

“Everybody always says, ‘Oh, I can’t get my kid off of the iPad…’ And then you see them here and there are parents that have to pick their kid up, covered in flour screaming, ‘I don’t want to go!’ and I mean, this is all us using our imagination and they love it.”

Thies says they have a list of programs that are happening year round. She says the next can’t-miss event will be in March with free admission to families wanting to learn more about science.
