HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A devastating incident in Hernando County has left two individuals in critical condition following an explosion and subsequent fire in their RV late Thursday night.
Richard Johnson recounted being jolted awake by the sound of the blast.
“I was asleep when a loud boom startled me awake. I looked outside and saw the motor home engulfed in flames,” Johnson explained.
Ella Seekel described being outside the RV with a friend when they were alerted by the explosion and the sight of the fire.
“My friend DJ rushed back inside to save his dog. Thankfully, they both survived, but he suffered severe burns and is in critical condition. I’m really worried about his chances,” Seekel shared. She noted that her friend had been using a propane tank for heat.
Richard Johnson says he had just warned the victim about doing that.
“I was over to his house earlier last night and he had a propane tank in there with one of them turkey cooking things, said man you don’t need to have that propane tank and burning that thing there, you need to have that propane tank outside,” said Johnson.
Seekell says the victim’s girlfriend was in the RV when it exploded.
“She ran out with multiple facial issues and in complete shock,” said Seekel.
Her friend went back into the RV to try and save his dog, but was not successful.
“He lost one dog to the fire and the screams of the dog was just horrific,” said Seekel.
She says her friend barely escaped with his life.
“I seen him jump out the window and hit the ground and I said ‘Oh my gosh,’ and I helped him get out away from the fire and about that time something else blew up and it just went boom, boom, boom all over,” said Seekel.
The State Fire Marshall’s office is now investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
