BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Facebook Live recording of a woman’s fatal shooting in Cocoa at the alleged request of her ex-girlfriend will be shown in court, according to the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney’s Office.

Aniyah Thomas, 25, and Leniquea Byrd, 24, each face a charge of second-degree murder in the 2020 shooting death of 27-year-old Nitekka Lennear, records show.

Byrd, accused of shooting Lennaear, is due back in court on Aug. 27 for a hearing, though it remains unclear whether her case will go to trial before the year is out, according to a spokesperson for the state attorney’s office.

Lennear was recording the Facebook Live on her cellphone when Byrd allegedly shot her nine times, investigators said. Lennear’s girlfriend said the shooting followed a physical fight that began “over a Facebook post and a Facebook status change,” according to an affidavit.

During the fight, Thomas allegedly told Byrd to “shoot that (expletive),” the affidavit states. Police said Lennear and Thomas dated for a year and that their relationship ended following a domestic-violence incident.

Police said Facebook Live began with Lennear and her girlfriend in a car heading to an apartment complex to confront the other couple. The video then shows Lennear’s partner and ex-girlfriend fighting before loud bangs are heard, according to investigators. Lennear then falls to the ground and the screen turns black, police said.
