CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois ice arena buzzed with excitement on Saturday as families eagerly laced up their skates, ready to embrace a beloved winter pastime.

The rink was teeming with skaters eager to revel in some post-holiday fun. They were taking full advantage of the university’s regular open-skate sessions, which are available to the public at least twice a week.
