NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Flags at the Capitol in downtown Nashville were lowered Thursday in honor of the 16-year-old girl shot and killed in the Antioch High School cafeteria.

Josselin Cores Escalante has been described as being a bright and compassionate person with dreams of becoming a doctor.

Thursday, people shared their condolences and memories on social media. In 2024, she celebrated her quinceañera and was filled with hope for the future.

The family has shared a GoFundMe account on their social media pages. The GoFundMe is raising money to send her body to Guatemala to be surrounded by family and loved ones. The message on the fundraiser said her parents were hardworking members of the community.

“Now, their dream of seeing Josselin graduate and achieve her goals has been cruelly cut short,” the description reads, in part.

A classmate and friend in one of Escalante’s classes told News 2 that she was a “very good person” and “a very charismatic person.” News 2 also spoke with her cousin, Dulce Aceituno Corea.

“My cousin was an educated girl. She didn’t get into trouble,” Corea said. “All her friends are also devastated by this news; they loved her very much. She was a very happy girl. She always smiled at anything.”
