ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A family in Orange County is demanding changes to slow down drivers after a car slammed into their home late at night, sending a 77-year-old man back to the hospital just an hour after he had returned home.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Blair Drive, near Dorscher Road. Investigators said the driver lost control after turning onto the street, sped through the yard and crashed into the house. The impact caused significant damage, now covered with wooden boards.

Kenyasha Flowers said she had just brought her father home from the hospital and was getting him settled when the crash happened.

“I turned the kitchen lights off at 2:09 and got in bed, and at 2:21 I hear screech and boom boom. And my dad starts screaming,” Flowers said.

She said her father was in the bathroom at the time.

“When I ran to him, he said he was in the bathroom, and while in the bathroom the car came through. Luckily he was in the doorway so it kind of pushed him out. But water was everywhere,” she said. “My dad is screaming. He has cuts and blood all over him.”

Deputies said 20-year-old Wilkinson Charles was behind the wheel. Investigators said he tried to run away after the crash but was caught nearby. He is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and hit-and-run involving property damage.

“As soon as he crashed, my dad instantly screams. So it’s like I know you heard the screaming. You didn’t care that you probably hurt someone? It was all about, let me just get away,” Flowers said.

Neighbors said speeding is a constant issue along Blair Drive. They’re calling on local leaders to add speed bumps to the road to help prevent future crashes.

“I emailed the mayor’s office as well as our commissioner, so hopefully we can get some things done,” Flowers said. “Please, help us in this area. It needs to be safer. They speed around here with no regards to anything, property, life, nothing.”

The family said repairs to the home are expected to take several months, but the 77-year-old victim is expected to recover.
