DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Balloons rose while tears fell for 12-year-old Kavari Drisdell. His family and friends filled the sky with bright colors a day after his death.

Decatur Police said the soon-to-be sixth grader was riding his bicycle eastbound across N Van Dyke Street and W King Street when he was hit by a car Sunday night. He later died from his injuries.

“I can never wake up and see my son again,” Kavari’s mother, Denise Boyd, said while standing among a growing memorial for her son.

On Monday, family and friends stood in the same road where their lives were forever changed Sunday night.

“I’m so sorry, Kavari, I should’ve been out here with you,” Kavari’s father Howard Drisdell said. “I’m sorry.”

Kavari was only a few yards away from his home, where his mother and sisters watched the accident from the porch.

“His body flew one way and the bike came another way,” Boyd said.

He was an older brother to a growing number of siblings. The children don’t yet understand why Kavari isn’t outside playing with them.

“My 5-year-old came down asking for his brother because he don’t understand right now what’s going on,” Boyd said.

Tears fell as balloons were released for Kavari, but the family stood united in faith knowing their little boy was smiling down.

Kavari’s contagious laugh has gone silent. Pictures are all that’s left to memorialize a life cut short.

45-year-old Hassan Woods of Decatur was arrested for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing death.

Kavari’s family said there will be a benefit for their son this Saturday.
