SAVANNAH, Ga. () – An innocent bystander was hit and killed during a high-speed police chase in Savannah last month, and Wednesday, his family hosted a memorial to celebrate his life.

On what would have been Darren Lewis’ 61st birthday, his loved ones hosted a balloon release in his honor at the same intersection where he was killed.
“These white balloons symbolize pure love, just pure love. A life, a legacy, of just love and affection,” Kathy Lewis, Darren Lewis’ wife, said. “I just want to celebrate him because he was more than deserving.”

Darren Lewis was allegedly hit and killed by a driver engaged in a chase with the Savannah Police Department on March 18.

“It’s like my world was just snatched away,” Kathy Lewis said.

Weeks later, the community came together to remember someone who brought so much light into the world.

“One of the things I’m going to miss about him is his laughter. His laughter was so crazy, you could probably hear him from about a block away,” Anthony Mosley, a lifelong friend of Darren Lewis, said. “Happy birthday…61 years old. I’m going to miss you brother.”

Those gathered at the memorial also brought up the idea of a Darren Lewis law that would discourage police chases.

“The people in this community, they’re afraid, not of an officer driving into their house or something, they’re afraid of what kind of city Savannah is,” Bobby Dicello, an attorney for the family, said. “This is a balloon gathering for you. Darren Lewis is a name you will remember and must remember. We are going to make change in this community to make sure this doesn’t happen to any of you or any of your family or your children.”

Lewis’ friends and family said his death was a tragedy they hope no one else will ever have to suffer.

“The voices of the people in this district, including this area of Liberty City, that’s who I listen to. That’s who I show up to. That’s who I make changes for. That’s who I support,” Dr. Estella Shabazz, Savannah District 5 Alderwoman, said.

Kenneth Gordon, the man who police believe was driving the car that hit Lewis, was arrested for homicide by vehicle, hit and run, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer for a felony offense on the night of the accident.
