In Morgantown, West Virginia, the atmosphere was somber at the Mountaineers’ football game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday. Just before the game began, attendees paused for a moment of silence, paying tribute to two West Virginia National Guardsmen who were victims of a shooting in Washington, D.C. earlier in the week.
The chilly weather did little to dampen the spirit of unity as the stadium announcer led the crowd in honoring U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, from Martinsburg, and U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, from Webster Springs.
Authorities reported that the two soldiers were shot near the White House while on deployment in the nation’s capital. Tragically, Spc. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries, while Staff Sgt. Wolfe remains in critical condition.
Law enforcement officials quickly apprehended the suspect, named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, shortly after the incident occurred.
