MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Both the driver and passenger of an SUV that crashed along Interstate 75 near Ocala on Saturday died at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 9:35 p.m. as the SUV traveled northbound on I-75 in the right lane, just north of County Road 484 (mile marker 341), troopers said.

For reasons unknown at this time, the driver appears to have lost control of the SUV, which exited the roadway to the right, entered the east grass shoulder and struck the concrete base of a light pole, according to an FHP crash report.

The SUV became fully engulfed in flames and Marion County Fire Rescue later pronounced its two occupants dead at the scene of the crash, the report states.

Positive identification for the driver and passenger — described in the report as female and male, respectively — is pending FHP’s investigation, troopers said.
