GYLNN COUNTY, Ga. () — A U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) recruit died, and several others were injured in a car crash over the weekend.

The fatal car crash occurred around 8 p.m. on Saturday in Glynn County on the F.J. Torras Causeway. Reports said that a Ford Escape attempting to turn left onto Marina Drive failed to yield to oncoming traffic and struck the side of a Jeep Wrangler carrying the recruits.

The death of 22-year-old USCP Recruit Christopher Katz was confirmed in a statement Monday morning by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle.

Three passengers, who were also USCP recruits, were ejected from the vehicle in the crash and were life flighted to Jacksonville for treatment.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of United States Capitol Police Recruit Officer Christopher Katz,” the statement said. “Our prayers are with his family, and we will honor his memory when the House returns on Tuesday. It is a tragic day with the news that several USCP recruits were involved in that fatal accident while in Georgia and are dealing with serious injuries.”

Katz and the other three recruits were training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick.
