SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The body of a man was found in a structure fire Friday evening in Springfield.

The Springfield Fire Department responded to a working structure fire on S 8th St. near S Grand Ave. on Friday. The residence was located in the 1500 block of S 8th St. and as of approximately 8:21 p.m., the fire was extinguished.

According to Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, the coroner’s office was notified and responded to the scene, where the Springfield man was pronounced deceased. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning, and the identity of the deceased man will be released pending notification of next of kin.

As of approximately 9:51 p.m., the fire department was still on scene for further overhaul.

The death is currently under investigation by the Springfield Fire Department, the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office.
