MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — One person is dead after being hit by a car, while walking on Illinois Route 16, near Mattoon.
Illinois State Police said that they responded to a crash just east of I-57 in Coles County, around midnight.
After investigating, State Police said that a 22-year-old man from Benton, Wisconsin was walking in the right lane of Illinois Route 16. A 2013 Ford Taurus was traveling west on Illinois Route 16, and hit the pedestrian in the roadway. The driver, a 35-year-old man from Mattoon was not injured in the accident. Two young girls were in the car as well, but were uninjured from the crash.
After the pedestrian was first hit in the crash, a second accident occurred. A 2014 Ford Escape was traveling west on Illinois Route 16 in the left lane. The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Mascoutah, hit the pedestrian from the first crash. She was cited for a DUI by the Mattoon Police Department.
State Police said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The westbound lane of IL Route 16 was closed until 5:47 a.m. for the crash investigation. No other information is available at this time.
