TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A tragic incident unfolded in Ybor City on Friday night, resulting in the death of a man following a “roadway dispute,” according to the Tampa Police Department.
The confrontation took place at the intersection of East 5th Avenue and North 22nd Street. Law enforcement officers responded to the scene after receiving reports indicating that a gunshot had been fired.
Upon arrival, police discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, the man succumbed to his injuries, authorities confirmed.
Investigators revealed that the individual suspected of the shooting is cooperating with the police and has claimed that the act was in self-defense.
While the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, detectives noted that an argument seemed to have occurred between the two men involved.
Police said they have recovered the weapon used during the shooting.
Several patrol cars remained stationed in the area into the night, with police tape blocking off parts of the road.
North 22nd Street between East 4th Avenue and East 5th Avenue and East 5th Avenue between North 21st Street and North 22nd Street were closed.
